How to Make Failure Work for You, Not Against You
18 Aug 2023 • 3 min read
Failures and roadblocks are a harsh reality of business, but they can also become markers of your progress. With these tips, you can learn how to embrace the learning process in failure and use the experience as a positive one in the long run.
It can be a tough pill to swallow when things don’t go according to plan, and even the best-laid plans can be subject to change when you’re dealing with the multi-faceted world of business. As hard as it is to face failures, there are ways to lessen the impact. Instead of dwelling on the negative, take heed of the lessons you learned from such an experience. Here are a few ways to look at the bright side and continue moving forward in your business journey.
1. Take failure as a temporary situation that gives you permanent capabilities
The advantage in failure is that you get to see the worst-case scenario and learn what is needed to fix things. This gives you a measure of how much flexibility matters, as you shape the way you set out to accomplish your objectives.
However you go about it, you’ll find out how far you need to go, and just how much responsibility you can take on before having to concede or call on others for help. Once you’ve worked through the adversity, you’ll also gain the insight and empathy to understand others who might go through the same challenges and offer them support.
2. Time to take a break — regroup, reflect, and adjust your goals
In some ways, failure can be an opportunity in itself. It allows you to take a pause, and ponder on what worked and what didn’t. Once you’ve had a chance to reflect and adjust your goals accordingly, you can improve on your next approach. In this regard, when failure happens, it’s not exactly the instance of not achieving success, but rather a chance to go back to square one and start over, or try something different.
3. Innovate and motivate yourself to achieve better things
Much like in most creative endeavours, the first draft or attempt is always going to be a little rough and in need of some improvement. Failure may just be a catalyst for growth. You’ll be able to recognise shortcomings and iron out the kinks in your plan. With the knowledge of what doesn’t work, you can now find ways to innovate or work around the stumbling block with varying ideas and starting points for research. Who knows, by adjusting your field of queries, you might just find a source of motivation you didn’t consider before that can redirect your next big attempt.
